Watering Less Was the Best Thing I Did for My Greenhouse

David Young watering plants in his greenhouse

I used to think the more I watered, the better my plants would grow.

In my greenhouse, everything looked fine at first — green leaves, steady growth — but something didn't feel quite right. The tomatoes weren't as firm as I expected, and during hotter days, the plants seemed to struggle more than they should.

Then one day, a neighbor gave me a simple piece of advice:

"Stop watering every day. Go deeper, just not as often."

It didn't sound right to me at the time, but I decided to try it anyway.

So I changed my routine. Instead of daily watering, I started giving the soil a deep soak and then leaving it for a few days before watering again.

At first, it felt wrong — like I was neglecting my plants. But after a while, I started to see the difference.

The plants became stronger. The leaves looked healthier. The tomatoes were firmer and more consistent. Even on warmer days, everything seemed to handle the heat much better.

What I later understood is that frequent light watering keeps roots near the surface. But deeper, less frequent watering encourages roots to grow down into the soil, making the plants more resilient over time.

"It's not about watering more — it's about watering smarter."

Now I've stopped watering every day — and my greenhouse is better for it.
